President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed Police Commissioner (COP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare to act as Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), effective Sunday, August 1, 2021.

This follows a Presidential directive that Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, the current IGP, should retire until retiring from active Police duties, on Thursday, 7 October 2021.

COP Dampare Profile

UCOP Dr Dampare is the Director-General in charge of operations of the Ghanaian Police Service.

He joined the service as a Constable and climbed the ladder for more than three decades serving the country, rising to the rank of COP.

Dr. Dampare joined the service 32 years ago without as secondary education graduate.

In 1991, upon completing his training, Dr. Dampare was named Best Recruit at the National Police Training School and won all the awards except for the ‘Best Marksman’ award.

Also in 1996, he received the Outstanding Academic Cards for 32 Officers from the Ghana Police Academy (formerly, Police College) and won all awards, including Excellence in Police Technology Excellence and Success in Education.

He then rose in value after completing various courses to become an ACCA chartered accountant.

The COP also served as a Researcher and lecturer at King’s College, University of London.

The new IGP is also a lecturer at the University of Cape-Coast (UCC), the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Regent University College and Data Link University College.

He is also one of the pioneer lecturers at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Business School in Kumasi.

He has served as Director-General of Finance, Director-General of Social Development, Director-General of Information Communication Technology, Commander of Police Command and Staff College, Accra Regional Police Commander, Director-General, Administration, among others.

UCOP Dr. Dampare became a 25-year Chartered Accountant while serving as a Constable Police Officer and currently holds a PhD in finance.

COP Dampare was the Special Assistant to the Regional Commander, United Nations Mission in Bosnia Herzegovina, Municipal Police Commander, Cape Coast, ADC to the Vice President of Ghana, the Treasurer / Chief Financial Officer, the Ghana Police Service and the Chief of Police and Drug Disk Department.
